Fragrences of the World
Collaboration with digital agency Mobikats to design and develop a white-label perfume catalogue for in-store customer engagement.

FRAGRANCES OF THE WORLD APP DESIGN
Fragrance expert Michael Edwards has dedicated more than 30 years developing the world’s most comprehensive perfume classification database. From that, the idea emerged to develop a brandable retail app to guide customers towards fragrances by way of filtering families, scents and notes. The objective is to help customers find new fragrances similar to those they already love.

I designed the user interface for the app, as well as developed a working prototype from which Mobikats could lift code for final development. I kept the styling clean and neutral to make the app easily adaptable for the brand employing it, or to work beautifully if left untouched.
Crucially I wanted to make use of Michael Edwards' Fragrance Wheel in the design – the cornerstone motif to his classification system. The motif, combined with the brand’s logo, afforded me a novel way of transitioning the database being queried to the presentation of its results, whilst simultaneously upholding the functionality of the wheel and its data.

WOODY ORIENTAL
The liaison of rich Oriental notes and the potent scents of patchouli and sandalwood produced some of the most original perfumes of the 1990s. This family emphasises the woody character of Floral Orientals.
SOFT ORIENTAL
Incense adds sensual overtones to fragrant flowers, spices and amber to create a softer style of Oriental. The base notes of a modern Soft Oriental are not as sweet or as heavy as a true Oriental and the result - a mélange of flowers and spices – is distinctly softer.

Staff in-store present customers with the branded app, from which they can commence their search.
Customers search for a fragrance they're familiar with and select a result from the database.
The search results present the three most comparable in-store fragrances. Tabbing between them leverages Edwards’ own Fragrance Wheel design for scent reference.
The scent family in the wheel can be expanded to define the fragrance notes and details about the classification.
